Sand City is one of the smallest cities in California by both population and land area - covering roughly 1.2 square miles on the Monterey Peninsula with only a few hundred full-time residents. The city takes its name from the large coastal sand dunes that once covered the land before development began in the mid-20th century. Today, Sand City is best known to Peninsula residents as the commercial hub along Del Monte Boulevard, where big-box stores, furniture retailers, and home improvement businesses serve shoppers from across Monterey County. But tucked in behind and around that commercial strip is a small residential population dealing with very real property maintenance challenges - sandy, shifting soil, daily salt air off Monterey Bay, and coastal humidity that tests every unprotected surface. We work in Sand City regularly alongside our broader Peninsula service area, which includes the homes in nearby Monterey to the south.
The city's western boundary runs along Monterey Bay, and the Sand City beach access and coastal trail section connects into the larger Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail that runs the length of the Peninsula. Properties near the bay face the most direct salt air and wind exposure. Sand City is completely surrounded by other Peninsula cities - Seaside to the north and east, Monterey to the south, and Del Rey Oaks nearby. That central location makes it easy to reach from anywhere on the Peninsula, and it means our crew can serve Sand City without long travel times from other job sites in the area. The city has also made a public commitment to sustainability, which is reflected in how some property owners here think about building improvements - favoring longer-lasting, lower-maintenance solutions over repeated short-term repairs. Residents of neighboring Del Rey Oaks share similar proximity to the bay but have a different residential character - quieter, more wooded, and with a higher share of single-family homes relative to Sand City's commercial-heavy layout.
